It’s YOUR Turn

I get it now. Our twins are 1 today, and I now understand how parents find the hidden reserves of patience and compassion. How caretakers (not just parents) somehow manage to scrape up those last morsels of energy to clean, feed, and soothe others. How your aches and pains can wait – someone else need your attention now.

A year in, and we’re still discovering the effects of pregnancy and parenting on our bodies. Carrying a baby leaves more than stretch marks and swelling – it stretches tendons and ligaments, and can cause long-term foot and leg pain. Not to mention the physical demands of carrying babies AFTER they’re born – arms, shoulders, knees, back, hips, and neck all suffer from strain. The lack of sleep is a whole other category! But somehow, it’s all more than worth it. The body is drained, but the heart is so full of love you somehow manage to keep going.

We both lost parents at an early age. Now, as parents, it is that much more important to ourselves that we take care of our health so we can see the high school graduations and weddings and our own grandchildren.

Caring for someone else, whether they are a child, a parent, a friend, a patient, or even a stranger, takes a physical and emotional toll. Your commitment to take care of another person can’t end with meeting their immediate needs. You, and your healthy presence, is a long-term need of theirs. In order to enjoy the recitals and sporting events and dances and holidays, you have to take care of yourself, too. It’s easy to say “I’m fine, I don’t need a break.” But it catches up to you. The people you love deserve you at your best. YOU deserve you at your best. You can’t take care of anyone if you use up those last reserves and get sick.
